Llyn Ogwen to Bethesda
10.45 miles
It seems that there is a tradition for this leg to be the longest on the challenge. Once again leg 4 turned out to be a stamina sucking section, with a steep initial climb followed by a long ridge walk which connects a series of peaks, the highest being Carnedd Llewelyn. It's spectacular country with views across Ogwen and Llafar valleys. Once up on the ridge the walking is not so tough.
For this section it was Malc, Dom and myself. The most difficult part of this leg was the descent, which was blister inducing, forcing your feet into the front of your boots. We all suffered here; Dom managed to use all of Lyn's blister plasters that night in order to patch his sorry feet. Mind you, Dom walked all day which as with last year was a major accomplishment.
The climb up onto Pen yr Ole Wen was amazing, with Tryfan framing an amazing backdrop down the valley. That's one for the future (they dont include it in the challenge because there is too much scrambling and climbing). This route included an interesting gulley section going up the ridge to Ole Wen, which required a bit of scrambling - for those with a dislike for heights it is nerve wracking.
All in all a good leg though, one which I think we gained some time with Malcolm putting on his turbo boots for the ridge section and leading us along at a cracking pace.

This brought back great memories of climbing with my dad when I was a kid. I practically grew up on Tryfan.
All I can manage these days is an annual trip up the PYG track with my 12 yr-old border collie, I'd love to go by Crib Goch but I'd never get her over the Pinnacles!
Green with envy.
